Fall!

Yay! It's finally that time of year. The leaves are falling, it's getting a little cooler, and the pharmacy's are full of Halloween decorations and mini, bite-sized candies. This is and has always been my favorite time of year. I'm hoping to dress up again this year for Halloween, but I'm not sure as what yet.

I know it's been a little while since my last post, sorry for the long delay, it's just that I've been working so much overtime lately that I have such little free time. When I do have some time, I'm glued to the web-site (ESPN not Blogger) or the TV trying to get a leg up on fantasy football.

In other news, Rita the latest hurrican has swept through the gulf coast, this time hitting mostly Texas, and only slightly flooding New Orleans. What have we learned these past few weeks from these hurricanes?
1. Mother Nature is berserk, it is very rare for 2 category 4 storms or higher to hit the mainland in the same year.
2. The Mayor and Governor of Louisiana are complete idiots. One is a perp and the other plain incompetent in all matters concerning governing except one - how to point the finger.
3. The low income class of New Orleans is probably thinking they've just hit the lotto. A big chunk of them are on government assistance anyway, so it's not like they worked long and hard to save up for anything they might have lost, now with the hurricane, they've got a fresh start. Free money, no record (no id, no record) and tons of support around the world for these leeches on society.
4. Bush has no balls. I can't beleive he came out and took the blame for that. He fired Brown, who fucking cares about Brown? Make Nagin and whatever her name is (governor) get fully embarrassed and own up to their negligence!

Ok, enough about Louisiana and Texas, to the people that are hard-working and deserving of our aid, our thoughts are with you. To the crooks that suck the blood and soul out of our society, may you drown in feces filled sewage.

Gadget news. NYC Police Department now has a PODCAST!Click on NYPD Website Ok, I can understand ESPN, 1010wins and such having a podcast, but the Police Department? That's very interesting, now you can hear about street closings on your own personal MP3 player - Yippee! Get the fuck out of here. Spend that money, time and research getting standardized, working radios, or maybe even RIM pagers (warrant checks, important info, etc) now that would be something!

TREO Joins M$FT. The Treo smartphone (same one I have) have stiffed their old operating system, the Palm OS and have switched over to the Windows platform. What does this means? Well right now, very little as the new phone won't be out until sometime next year. Windows has always been more multimedia friendly, a little prettier and sometimes more impressive. It works with Word, Excel and the majority of the office suite right out of the box, and now has integreted "push" email, like the Blackberry's have. You can watch movies and videos using Windows Media Player (WMP) and need not download 3rd party software. That sounds nice, but you are giving up the ease and simplicity of the Palm. Yes it usually has less memory and a slower processer, but that's because the software that runs on Palm needs less to make it work well, it is more efficient. It's easier to use and has a much quicker learning curve. More programs are written for it and above all, it works with Macs as well as Windows machines. The new phone running Windows sure does look pretty, but I think I'll wait until the new Palm version comes out. Which hopefully they make one. You should hope so too, cause remember that even if you don't like Palm, without competition, we all lose. The more companies try to make a similar product the more choice we have, the lower the price and the faster the turnaround for next generation models. Now all I need is to win the lotto to pay for all these new gadgets....

Gas prices!!!

It may be hard to see, but this is what it costs me to fill up my tank these days. Over fifty fucking dollars, someone should be impeached or fired for this horseshit. It's getting out of hand, I'm ready to start riding my vacuum cleaner to work if it'll save me money.

Mamaroneck Playhouse 4

Mamaroneck Playhouse 4

I made a stop by my old neighborhood over the weekend. One of my stops during that time was to the old Mamaroneck Playhouse 4, over on Mamaroneck ave. This place has a lot of memories as it was the place of my first job, that was not family owned. I remember I was only 16 at the time, and I wasn't sure if they'd hire me being so young. I worked there until I graduated highschool and went off to college.

The place has a lot of history of it's own, even before I made it there. Before it was a movie theater, it was a literal playhouse, with stages and dressing rooms and no big silver screen. Once it was converted the rooms in the back went mostly unused and my friends and I used to wander around there, scaring the crap out of each other. It would be a great place for a scray movie. Now the managers at the time were pretty fucked up individuals themselves, but we sure had a lot of fun.

On hot summer days, we'd get a keg and go hang out in the back rooms getting drunk and throwing on boxing gloves then beating the shit out each other. One night a whole bunch of us got drunk and threw on boxing gloves, then a big fat mexican guy and me beat the crap out of each other. At the tender age of 16 I learned 2 things.
1.Mexicans love the sport of boxing only second to their love of soccer.
2.I fight much better when I'm not drunk.

These are 2 lessons that have served me well throughout the rest of my life.

Now that was litereally half a lifetime ago, and what brought me back to the theater was it's bargain prices. A regular movie at night is $7 a ticket! That's like 1990 prices! So 2 tickets here is only a little more expensive then 1 in Manhattan. A matinee, which they define as a showing before 6pm (no one does that anymore, at best, it's the first showing of the day) costs a rock-bottom price of $4.50.

As I walk in, I see the theater has barely changed, other then the staff and some new posters, it's nearly the same as it was 15 years ago. My buddy, who's known me since elementary school chuckles, then reminds me of the time I had to dress up like a cowboy during the "Back to the Future III" promotion. Somehow, my subconcious has blocked that painfull memory from me. I do however remember sneaking in friends to see Batman, Home Alone, Total Recall, among other movies back then.

The movie that we decided to see? "The Transporter 2". What a piece of crap you say? Ok, well, lets call a spade a spade. This movie isn't going to win any Oscars anytime soon, but you know what, if you go into thinking you are ready for some mindless, hookey, really ridiculous action, then you're going to love it. Now let me warn you, there is some pretty fucking really retarded stuff in this movie and a real lack of T&A, unless you count that skanky ematiated stripper/assassin. It seems as if Jakie Chans choreagrapher has lent his expertise here, but one main differance is that Chan and even Jet Li really go out of there way to show you their moves, so you can pratically feel it. In Jason Strathams fight scenes, it's so fast and so chopped up, you really don't see anything. It's reminiscient of Matt Damon's fight scenes in his "Jason Bourne" movies, but not as good. One other complaint, they go through great lengths to display the fighting prowess of the badguy. I mean he has the classic rich guy beats up on the gang of hired henchman who wait patiently in a circle while he preforms martial arts moves on one after the other (also used by bad guys in "The Karate Kid", "Rapid Fire", "The Octagon", "Enter the Dragon" among others). After showing what a badass he is, you can't wait until the final show down, which in this movie was a bit of a disappointment... Anyway, good car scenes (great car), decent fighting and a really lame-o story line. It's still a good time, just keep saying to yourself "it's only a movie, it's only a movie!"

Monday's are a surprisingly good day to go to the museum, there aren't that many people, so it's not too congested. The IMAX show was The Amazing Sea, or something like that, and it was actually pretty good. One of my pet peeves though is having crying babies attend these things. If the kid starts to cry or babble, "shhhhh" isn't going to do it. You've got to pick the brat up and take him outside. (spanking him, once he is outside). Other than that, the show was good.

After that we went to the new exhibit and it was very interesting, with a walk through, that included video presentations, a walking model of a T-Rex and other displays.

The Monk's outfit shown in the picture above is in the Asian People wing of the Museum. This exhibit has special significance to me cause I experianced this aspect of Asian and Buddhist tradition. I wore these saffron robes, and carried the alms bowl. It was nearly 10 years ago, yet the lessons I learned are still with me today. Here's a treat for you, Buddhism in a nutshell.

*Nothing is permanent (can't live forever)
*Attachment is suffering (the more you are attached to something, the more it sucks when you either lose it, see above, or never attain it).
*Everthing in moderation
*Happiness is truly attained when you've released all ties to material matters.

That's more or less it, and you didn't need to meditate in a forest for decades to glean the knowledge I've just bestowed open you. Kneel before me now!

Free time begets random thoughts.

There was a time that I used to bartend. Don't why this thought popped into my head, but I've come to realize that there are 2 types of bartenders. The kind that can't wait until 4am, and his shift is over so that he can rush home. This guy, doesn't waste any time, he's got the chairs on the table and is sweeping the floor a half hour before the bar closes. When it's time, he's out the door on the dot. He's probably in bed by 4:15 am.

Then there's the other kind, the bartender that isn't really in a rush to be anywhere. He'll wait until 4 to start cleaning, if there are people in the bar, he'll just chill and talk with them until last call. Sometimes he'll lock up, have a beer, and watch a little tv before finally cleaning up. This guy usually gets home around 5:30 in the morning. He's more laid back, maybe a bit of a procrastinater. Then it hit me. It's true of all of life. You have basically these two types of personalities. Me I guess I'm more of a number 2 type.

Ultimate Fighter2 is on. This season is a little disappointing so far, 2 people have quit and one is injured and no one has fought yet. Of course it's only the first episode, maybe it'll pick up. The next UFC is going to held at Mohegan Sun, I'd like to go, but I've really got to start saving money.

I just finished Kung Fu Hustle, it was in my Netflix queue. I gotta tell you, I love this movie. The movie is friggan hilarious. I love that weird dance scene and there are so many homages to classic movies. I recognized the Axe Gang from "Gangs of New York", references to Bruce Lee, the Matrix and even Spiderman. I might have to buy this DVD. A five out of five starts for this movie!

Fantasy Football

It's tough to see, but here we are at O'Flanagans, poring over over our sheets trying to get our team together. It was a good turn-out almost everyone made here, or had a representative.

Paul, the bartender did right by us, so it was a fairly good night. I have a pretty decent team, would be really great to win this pool!

Lion's Dance

This is in Chinatown, where two martial arts students are having a demonstration of the Lion Dance. When these guys have the act done right, it looks really cool. These 2 were hacks though, I was embarrassed for them when they fell off the ladder.

Beautiful day today! You can practically smell fall coming. It's a little cooler, days are getting a little shorter and all the back to school ads are in full swing. Makes me nostaligic. Begining of school was like a clean slate. A brand new start. I miss school. All of it, elementary, highschool and especially college. Hopefully I'll make the most out of this time now, so I can look back one day and say 'I really miss my thirty's. Now that was some of the best times of my life'. Some how, I don't think so.

Other news. I paid nearly $3000 dollars to various debts today, just about getting me debt free. How the fuck does that shit add up so fast. I'm never carrying a balance again, Amex only for me.

Kate

Meet Katelyn, the newest addition to our family. Born on Friday, August 19th (another Leo!), Kate was a little over 6 lbs, full head of hair and a winning smile. Teresa's doing well too, she'll be going home today. She and Tony are both very lucky and very happy. I hope Candy (the dog), doesn't get too jealous!

Yay! Motorcycles!

Ok, it's really a scooter (though the weight and engine class technically qualifies it as a motorcycle). I feel a little cheesy zipping around in one and I sure do miss my Suzuki Katana. These things are still a lot of fun. Actually with gas prices so high, I was halfway contemplating getting one to commute to work. Then I was told, these run for $5000 each. For that kind of money, I'll by a used Ducati Monster!

Late baby shower

You gotta love our family. It's 8pm pitch black outside with a heavy thunder storm dumping water down on our BBQ and what do we do? Grill in the Garage!

The occasion is Teresa's baby shower, she's gonna be a Mommy in about 3 weeks, so we're having a little get together to celebrate. It's good to have the family all together, even though the weather didn't cooperate with us. As always the food was great. Now that I was off the hook for this weekend, I know I'm probably working next weekend - crap.

The Palisades

Last week we went all the way up to the Palisades to do a little shopping. Target was our main stop, I get so annoyed when I hear people pronounce Target "Tar-Jay". It's so friggan lame, and stopped being funny about 4 years ago. We ate at Chili's as you can see in the pic. I love their Blooming Onion, unfortunately so much that we were unable to eat our main dishes. I had the country fried steak, while Lek had the Ribs. I also got a frosty mug of beer, and got another one free, not sure why, but hey, I'm not complaining. Lek got the Margarita which came in a shaker that she got to keep. She managed to squeeze out 3 full glasses from the shaker, which was just the right amount cause Lek was mumbling something about how her face was getting numb and heavy. All in all, not a bad night out.

More Ramblings

If anyone is interested, this weekend, I'm going to be at my folks house for a BBQ. Pops is going to be cooking and it looks like the whole family is going to be there. It's going to be just like old times, so feel free to stop by and grab some eats. I hope every one has enjoyed their summers, cause it looks like it's rapidly coming to an end. It's still friggan hot and I really can't wait until fall. I want to go apple picking, I want football, I want my birthday, and halloween, and thanksgiving and all that great eating.

Speaking of football, I'm doing fantasy football this year, if anyone is interested. I have spots for about five more people if you want it. Let me know, we are probably doing it on ESPN.com and it's going to be $50 per person. Winner and person with most points get prizes. We'll most likely do a draft this coming weekend.

Happy Birthday to all my August people!

I'm not sure why this is, but I have a large group of friends who have birthdays in early August. Interestingly according to the Zodiac Libras (which I am) get along best with Leos (early August) and Gemini's (not sure when). So maybe there is something to this astrology business....

Anyway, Jeff, Chris, Liz and Catherine, may you have a Happy and Healthy birthday and many, many more and keep in mind that mine is only a couple months away! ps. Strawberry shortcake is my favorite!

Verizon Motorola 710 Phone

I am selling this nearly brand new verizon, Motorola 710 cell phone, with box and everything that comes original with the phone. CD, holster, manual, charger etc. This phone looks sweet with it's distinctive red eye cyclops look. It has a crystal clear display, is web-enabled, a 1.3 megapixel camera (same as many digital cameras), can take video, and also has bluetooth. I am selling it here for $100. I am also going to sell it on ebay and craigslist for $175. Let me know if you are interested or have any questions!

Hot, Hot, Hot!

This like the 3rd day in a row that it's been over 90 degrees. Argggghhh, it's so nasty out. Of course this year the air conditioning in my car goes kaput. Do I fix it? Or suck it up for the rest of summer? Summer is almost over, but damn it it hot!

Another Lazy Sunday

This year is really flying by. We are at August already! Hopefully this year I'll be able to go on the annual camping trip. Even if it's not on labor day weekend, I'd still like to make it to at least one camping trip this year. Last year I only made it snowboarding 2 times the entire year. I think this year I'm going to make it a point to partake in more activities. I remember it wasn't too long ago where one summer I'd go kayaking, play golf (I still suck at it), go indoor rock-climbing and play on a beach volleyball team. I still had time to work out and at night play on the dart team. Those were the days. There is so much going on in NYC, I guess I'll have to figure out how to use it. I checked out www.craigslist.org for shits and giggles and there was actually a lot out there. I liked the 1 day sailing trips, it was like $40 for the day and I guess you charter the boat. Not that bad of a deal.

Yesterday a bunch of my friends had a nice pow-wow. The standard BBQ, poker, beer, and Bond/Mario-cart night. I missed out on that, but I hope everyone had a good time. I, in the meantime went to a friends engagement party all the way up in Middletown. Although I had a great time, it was also depressing. It took me almost 2 hours to get there, that's quite a ways up. The houses were beautiful, and I asked around to see how much houses there were. I was told I'd be looking at $500,000 average around there. That's 2 hours away and I can't find anything affordable. At this rate, I'm gonna have to go to Canada to find propert I can afford.

ICE Your Cell Phone

I read this article on CNET's Blog recently, and it seems like a terrific idea. The article suggests typing I.C.E, which stands for In Case of Emergency, in front of loved one's contact information, so in the event that you're in a situation where emergency workers would need to contact your family, they can scan through your phone and see the I.C.E designation you have there, and be able to quickly contact them.

Of course it's important that people who are emergency workers are familar with this, so they know to look for it, and I'm not sure New York first responders are aware of this, since my first reading of this is through Cnet and not work. In any case, spread the word as this might one day help you.

Ok, I know it's weird that the only movies I've seen lately are based on Comic books. The people who market these movies and created these movies are actually on to something. These are comics that we all grew up too and have waited a long time for a faithful adaptation to finally be made. Technology and movie magic can finally bring to life our most favorite villains and heroes.

Growing up, my brother and 2 of my best friends collected comics, and it was a great outlet for us, a great way to encourage our creatitivity and a wonderful hobby for us to spend our free time. We would go to comic book conventions and during the summers I remember we'd hang out in the comic book store in town and it was just a fun, simple time for us. I regret every single day the fateful decision to sell my comic books to broker a flight to Denmark. The trip was great and I will have awesome memories for the rest of my life, but I still want my original Wolverines 1-4 limited edition back! Grrrr.

Back to the movie. Special effects were good, but nothing ground breaking or new. They did a great job with the Human Torch, he was a fun character. Ben Grimm (aka The Thing) was great, Michael Chiklis did a terrific job and the suit looked great. I am so glad they didn't go the way of CGi like that disastor the Hulk (what a shitty movie). Jessica Alba was very sexy as Sue Storm. Sue Storm was supposed to be a blond haired, blue eyed, southern belle type goodie-goodie, not a sultry, dusky, vixen played by Alba. I'm not complaining, just making a notation. The guy that plays Dr.Doom was great too, arrogant and powerful, easy to hate. He was perfect. Reed Richards was a wet blanket. Anyway I have a feeling that if you enjoyed the comic as a kid, you're going to love this movie. If you have no idea who the Fantastic Four are you're going to think "hey, they ripped off The Incredibles!" and that was a better movie...."

NYCHA Hard at Work

No, he's not dead, or unconscious, he's merely sleeping. This is a New York City Housing Authority employee catching a siesta on city time. If you live in NYC this is where your hard earned money is going. Enjoy!

London Bombing

Terrorism is probably the most cowardly act any group can commit. I don't understand how any group can condone the horrible acts of killing scores of innocent, people. It's just such nonsense.

I see they've raised the awareness level to Orange in the US and in NYC they've increased the Police Presence. As of right now, it seems New Yorkers are as resilent as ever and refused to be cowed by these assholes, transportation over the subways have not really changed and New York is going about it's business as usual.

So far the count is as high as 700 people injured and about 40 people killed. My thoughts and prayers to our neighbors across the pond.
